Secret Knots was made over the course of a number of months at Eary Canal studios in Oakland, forged in the furnace, sheltered from chill winds and given ample time to come to fruition. Much of the CD is material which the NV Trio were playing and developing on the road with Ani Difranco, Boz Scaggs, and They Might be Giants, so if you saw the Trio at one of those shows and asked about a song, chances are it's on here.

An urban odyssey, seen through the eyes of a girl. This record is something of a departure for Venable, whose previous records have tended to explore the pathology of "characters who might have felt at home in Tom Waits' worst urban nightmares". Those characters have ranged from the down and out (a dying transvestite) to the downright bizarre (an abandoned car singing to its murdered driver). Boots on the other hand presents a much more unified statement. It seems to be an investigation into what it means to be a woman. "In so many of my favorite stories," says Venable, "these troubled men dream of finding a woman to save them. You read stories like that and you're troubled, and you start dreaming of the same thing. Then one day you wake up and say, wait, I am the woman in those stories. But I'm troubled! So now who's going to save me? I think that's where Boots begins."

Boots is a living room effort, born of 6 months of sonic experimentation and obsessive tinkering. Arrangements are lush, featuring electric guitars, violin, keyboards, old synths, drums, and many sounds that producer Todd Sickafoose and Venable can't remember how they made.

A live recording of the Noe Venable Trio performing at Mo's Melody Mansion in San Francisco, Saturday Night January 20, 2000. There's no clapping until the end, so you can listen to it at night without bursts of applause to jolt you out of your twilight haze. This album, along with its title song, is featured in the movie "Cherish" by director Finn Taylor (Dream of the Fishes) which stars Tim Blake Nelson, Robin Tunney, and Liz Phair. In fact, in the film, Tim Blake Nelson's character asks for a copy of Down Easy at Mod Lang in Berkeley! (Released through Fineline in 2002)
Noe Venable (voice & guitar), Todd Sickafoose (acoustic bass), Alan Lin (violin)
