When certain folks buzz, Ms. Hemm takes to listening. After receiving a number of emails and whispered "check out, check outs!" from reputed ears about town, I decided you all should know about Noe Venable too. A young thing of, oh 22 or so, she has just released her first record, "No Curses Here," produced by the great Lee Townsend (Bill Frisell, Rinde Eckert, Charlie Hunter.)

Noe's truly poetic lyrics and theatrical background (she's worked with local visionary George Coates) put her on an entirely different planet than most young women with a guitar slung about their necks. Think Tom Waits or Rickie Lee before you'd ever reach for that Lilith Fair stereotype. Another plus: Ms. Venable earns her living by making marionettes. She'll be performing tonight with her crack band at the Hotel Utah, SF.
